Principal Spotlight

Each month, Principal Jackie Collins spotlights learning happening at Mahtomedi Middle School. This month the Principal's Spotlight focuses on Community and Global Impact.

Jackie Collins, Principal, Mahtomedi Middle School

We are so proud of the middle school kids and families who raised a whopping $8,653.00 during our Zephyr Service Project. Mrs. Paumen and 32 student council members spent an afternoon at Target purchasing items from wish lists to help make the season a little brighter for 140 students in our schools.

We are also impressed with the beautiful Holiday cards our 7th and 8th grade students have created over the last few days. These cards will be delivered to a few of our senior centers in the community to spread some Holiday cheer.

Opportunities for service to others are always a high priority for our middle school kids. At this stage of development, their “social brain” starts to shift its focus from self to an awareness of others. Students are developing empathy, navigating peer relationships, and trying to make sense of a variety of social cues and settings. One thing our Zephyrs are good at recognizing is when it is the right time to step up and support our community.

Being an active community member extends beyond annual projects and giving during Holiday seasons. We encourage you to talk with your child(ren) about how they can be involved in the community all year long.

- Helping older neighbors by shoveling walkways, bringing garbage bins to the street, raking leaves, helping them with technology

- Offering to walk a dog or care for a dog when someone goes out of town

- Playing outside with young neighborhood kids so their mom/dad can get a few things done in the house

- Brushing snow off the neighbor’s car or mom/dad’s car

- Taking a plate of cookies or a meal to someone new to the neighborhood or someone who might need a pick-me-up

We truly are blessed to be part of an exceptional community!

Wishing you all a relaxing winter break. See you in 2026!

Stay Home When Sick

Please submit an absence request in Infinite Campus for each day your child is sick. When submitting the absence request please indicate the symptoms your child is experiencing. The health offices need to track illness rates and report to the MN Department of Health if illness rates reach a certain threshold so it is important that families report illness information when submitting the absence request.

Your child must stay home from school if they have any of the following:

  • If your child has a fever of 100°F or higher, they must stay home until they have been fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
  • If your child has vomited or has diarrhea, they must stay home for 24 hours after the last episode.
  • If your child has any rash of unknown cause, check with your family physician before sending your child to school.
  • If your child has been diagnosed with Strep Throat, they must stay home for 12 hours after antibiotic treatment has started.
  •  If your child has an uncontrollable cough that prevents them from engaging in learning, your child must stay home.
  • If your child has tested positive for infectious disease such as influenza, RSV, or COVID-19, they must stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours, and feel well enough to participate in school. Please contact the health office for further direction for any diagnosed communicable diseases.

Safety for Students

Families, please help us keep our students safe during drop-off and pick-up times before and after school.

Obey the speed limit and the crossing guard. If you choose not to, you may be ticketed.

Winter Weather Information

When cold weather arrives in Minnesota, we want to ensure you have the information you need about weather emergency communications related to closings, delays, and early dismissals. Click here to read the email shared with our school community to learn more about the three types of weather-related messages you may see during emergency weather. Be sure to check your Infinite Campus account to ensure your contact information is up to date.

Winter Choir Concerts

The Middle School 6th & 8th Grade Choirs performed in their Winter concerts last week and they did a wonderful job. Congratulations on making some beautiful music, Zephyrs!

Kids in Cooking Club

Zephyr Cooking Club

Our middle schoolers recently jumped right into their first Zephyr Cooking Club meeting, where they made Tik Tok Ramen, homemade whipped cream, and frozen hot chocolate.

The Zephyr Cooking Club is a Community Education after-school activity at MMS where students build kitchen skills, work as a team, and, of course, enjoy their creations! Each meeting includes cooking, tasting, and cleaning their kitchens together. We love seeing our students grow in confidence, learn real-world skills, and have fun in the process! Click here to see behind-the-scenes moments from their first meeting.

Zephyr Celebrations

There are always reasons to celebrate! If you know of a staff member who has gone above and beyond, or have heard of a particularly excellent experience that your student had at school, we would love to hear about it! Click here to submit a celebration form and we'll make sure to take note and celebrate along with you!
