Principal's Spotlight on Learning |
Each month, Principal Justin Hahn spotlights learning happening at our school. This month, the Principal's spotlight focuses on rigorous and meaningful learning. |
|
|
When we think of rigorous and meaningful learning, two ways Mahtomedi High School is bringing it to life are through our concurrent enrollment and AVID programs. These programs challenge students today while building the skills and confidence they’ll use in college, career, and life.
Over the MEA break, several families shared that they were beginning to schedule college tours and one family shared that they hadn’t realized how valuable concurrent enrollment courses could be in saving on college costs. We’re proud to offer rigorous, college-level coursework right at MHS, through Advanced Placement, College in the Schools, and Articulated Credit.
Mr. Rob Garry recently received a note from a Class of 2025 family whose student’s CIS University of Minnesota Spanish IV credits transferred:
“Based on the information we had received, we were fully expecting he would receive 5 semester credits to transfer in, so you can imagine our pleasant surprise when his transcript reflects 8(!) total credits (4 for each semester) that transferred from U of M Twin Cities for his Spanish IV CIS during his 2024-2025 academic year at MHS. Thank you SO MUCH for offering these college-level courses at MHS. It really DOES help to better prepare students for the academic rigors of post-secondary education, as well as providing a cost-saving way to earn college credits while being able to stay on the MHS campus with their friends.”

|
Now in our second year of implementation, AVID strategies are impacting every student at MHS. Aligned with our Strategic Plan and Portrait of a Graduate, AVID helps close the opportunity gaps and prepares students for college and career success. Teachers use high-impact, evidence-based strategies. Our Media Specialist, Ms. Jean Oswald, has also supported our teachers in implementing these strategies. She has been speaking to social studies and English classes and providing digital literacy and research instruction. In the AVID elective course, students strengthen their self-advocacy through peer solution groups, tackling challenges like essays or grade improvement together. They offer feedback using sentence stems such as “Have you tried…” Through both AVID and concurrent enrollment, MHS students are experiencing what it means to engage in rigorous and meaningful learning. These experiences prepare them for college, career, and life.

Academic Achievement Awards |
Congratulations to our MHS students who were awarded Academic Achievement Letters this month! The Academic Awards at Mahtomedi High School recognize a student’s past year’s academic achievement. It takes considerable time and effort to receive this recognition, and we are very proud of their accomplishment. At school, we held a recognition celebration and presented students with their Mahtomedi Letter (if it was their first Letter) and a certificate. Photos from the event are available here. Inside the Classroom: AP Psychology |
|
|
AP Psychology is a year-long Advanced Placement social studies course at Mahtomedi High School open to students in grades 9-12. In this class, students have the opportunity to look into psychological studies, research brain and body development, and understand why people think and behave the way they do. This class is a rigorous learning opportunity where students use college-level study skills to earn college credit right here at the high school. The instructor of the class, Ms. Emily Larson, shared what it takes to be a teacher of an AP class: “AP teachers must have a deep understanding of their specific content area, and have a desire to teach upper-level content to students.” Recently, the students participated in a class discussion on the past and present use of genetic technology and how it could be used in the future. ✏️Written by Norah Jansen, Class of 2028 student at Mahtomedi High School and Mahtomedi Public Schools Communications Intern |

Exploring College Pathways and Building Academic Skills with AVID |
On October 8, AVID Elective students attended a College Fair where they had the opportunity to speak with representatives from a variety of colleges and universities. They asked thoughtful questions, gathered information, and continued to explore their post-high school options.
Additionally, students began their AVID tutorials, which are structured, student-led sessions designed to deepen their understanding through collaborative inquiry. These tutorials not only support academic success but also develop essential skills such as communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
