In the spring of 2024, Mahtomedi Community Education surveyed community members about how to support the District Strategic Plan with events and programming. One of the pieces of feedback we heard most often was career exploration for high school students, including a career fair with employment, internship, and volunteer opportunities.
Over the last year, staff from the district and Community Education worked together to make it a reality, and our community members were ready to partner with us! At the Career, Internship, and Volunteer fair, we had over 30 businesses and organizations showcase opportunities and over 25 volunteers review resumes and practice networking skills.
We are so grateful for our community–thank you to all of the amazing volunteers who shared their time and directly made an impact on over 400 students!
Mahtomedi Community Members’ Leadership Key to Middle School Nordic Program
The Mahtomedi Community Education Nordic Ski Club, open to students in grades 6-12, recently finished its first-ever season, thanks to the initiative of two community members, Kelly Roberts Lane and Kelly Unger. Their inspiration? According to Kelly Roberts Lane, it was all about “friends, fun, and learning an outdoor activity that could be carried through a lifetime.”
Parent feedback highlighted the instructors’ upbeat energy, expertise, and adaptability in engaging students despite unpredictable weather. One parent shared, “My son was so glad to be part of learning Nordic…He enjoyed getting outdoors after school, bonding with friends in nature, and the great attitudes of his coaches who encouraged students to learn something new and have fun while doing it.” Click here to learn more about the season and our instructors' leadership!

Family Literacy Night
Mahtomedi Community Education is proud to partner with Washington County Library to provide free monthly Family Literacy Nights for caregivers and children ages 0-5 years old. These sessions, led by Youth Services Librarian Rachel Miller, are designed to cultivate early literacy in a fun and engaging way. Each of her sessions is geared around a different theme, such as Spring or Feelings, and she engages children and families with a variety of activities, including dance, song, storytime, finger play, and a craft. Through this blend of music and movement, Rachel helps our youngest learners build skills such as fine motor movement and empowers caregivers with the tools to promote literacy at home! Girl’s Flag Football Starts at Mahtomedi
Girl’s flag football has been on the rise in districts across Minnesota. When Mahtomedi Community Education heard there was an interest right here in our community, we made it a reality! Girl’s Flag Football, open to students in grades 3-5, recently wrapped up its first season at O.H Anderson Elementary, while the middle school program held its first practice. Women Who Walk Group Fosters Community
Last summer, community member Sarah Newman was a regular on the Lake Links Trail in Mahtomedi–along with her daughter and her pup. Looking for a way to connect with her community and keep up with her love of walking as cold weather crept in last fall, she approached Mahtomedi Community Education with the idea of starting a weekly walking group. Women Who Walk meets weekly at the District Education Center and boasts a core group of community members who return every week to make the 1-3 mile walk together, adapting the pace and route to best fit everyone’s needs. Click here to hear from Sarah about what the group has meant to her.
Women Who Walk speaks to the power of community education bringing people together. We love seeing community members like Sarah help us create new opportunities! If you have a new idea, be sure to send it to communityed@isd832.net.
