Each month, Principal Scott Briske spotlights learning happening at our school. This month, the Principal's spotlight focuses on Leadership.
At Wildwood Elementary, our students are not just learning how to lead; they are actively practicing these essential qualities in their daily lives while at school. Here’s a closer look at what being a leader looks like for a Wildwood student.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
One of the most critical aspects of leadership at Wildwood Elementary is the awareness of one’s environment. Our student leaders pay close attention to their surroundings, recognizing potential hazards on the playground or in the classroom. This proactive approach not only ensures their safety but also promotes a sense of responsibility for the well-being of their peers. By being mindful of their environment, these young leaders set a positive example for others to follow. You can see this during all of our recesses and while students are moving throughout our school.
Treat Others with Kindness and Consideration
Leaders at Wildwood Elementary understand the importance of treating others with kindness and consideration. They practice politeness and actively listen to their classmates, valuing differing opinions and fostering an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels heard and respected. This practice is integrated into our daily routines through morning meetings and listening sessions, where students learn the value of empathy and communication. To encourage this positive behavior, students are recognized with "caught being kind" stickers, proudly worn as badges of honor. If you see a student sporting one of these stickers, you can be sure they are demonstrating true leadership!
Take Ownership of Your Actions
Accountability is a vital trait for our student leaders at Wildwood Elementary. They learn to acknowledge their mistakes and understand that making errors is an integral part of learning. When our little leaders stumble, they are given the opportunity to rectify their mistakes, demonstrating personal growth and resilience. This willingness to learn from their experiences fosters a culture of responsibility and encourages others to embrace their own accountability.
Our students are actively engaged in creating a nurturing school environment where they can grow as individuals and leaders. By paying attention to their surroundings, treating others with kindness, owning their actions, keeping their promises, and helping those in need, Wildwood students are not just preparing for their future—they are shaping a brighter future for their school community. As they move through the Mahtomedi schools, these invaluable skills will undoubtedly serve them well, making them exemplary leaders in all aspects of their lives.
Each spring, teachers and support staff meet and confer to develop class lists for the coming year, striving to create classes where optimum learning for all students can take place. Although teacher requests are not considered, if you have specific information about your child that should be taken into consideration, please complete this form. This form is optional. Previous family input forms do not carry over from year to year. Additionally, information that comes in after the deadline will be more difficult to consider since the placement process will have already started. This is due April 11, 2025. Note: All of this information is confidential and only shared with Mr. Briske and Ms. Prather.
The Annual Report to Our Community is a print piece mailed to all district residents, staff, and families. The 2023-24 school year issue was recently mailed to stakeholders. The report contains current district data and showcases the academic excellence at Mahtomedi Public Schools. Click here to view the 2023-24 Annual Report.
Mahtomedi High School is seeking businesses and organizations to attend its career fair on April 11. Volunteers will visit with students about careers and potential employment, internships, or volunteer opportunities. Click here to sign up. Times are flexible.
You might notice a Washington County Sheriff in our parking lot during arrival and dismissal times. They will be there to help ensure safe procedures as our students, parents, and staff come to and leave school. Thank you!

Last week, our Wildwood students became songwriters in music class! With the help of musician, James Hersch, and his guitar, each class wrote a song based on a children's book! The kids enjoyed learning about how stories, patterns, & rhyming come together in songwriting to create music. Each class will have the chance to share their song with their peers and families in a showcase later this spring.
This artist residency is possible thanks to the Ellen C. Bruner Professional Performing Artist Residency Program. Special thanks to Wildwood Artist Series (a committee of MAEF) for their continued support of music education in our schools!
