Principal's Spotlight on Learning

Each month, Principal Susie Prather spotlights learning happening at our school. This month, the Principal's spotlight focuses on Expertise.

Dear OHA Students and Families,

At Mahtomedi, we are proud to have dedicated educators who challenge, support, and care for our students every day. This month, we are highlighting our exceptional K-5 English Language Arts (ELA) team for their tireless efforts to enhance literacy instruction.

During the 2024-25 school year, our K-5 teachers have devoted countless hours to collaboration, learning, reflection, and planning around literacy which shows their commitment to excellence in literacy instruction K-5. They have embraced the Minnesota State Read Act, deepened their understanding of the science of reading, and carefully selected and implemented new resources to strengthen literacy instruction. Core components include:

  • Foundational Skills: Implementing UFli, Functional Phonics, and Morphology.

  • Core Literacy Resources: Focusing on knowledge building, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing.

We recognized the outstanding work of our K-5 ELA team at the Zephyr Showcase on May 12. The event featured third-grade students from Ms. Gibson’s,  Ms. Loosbrock's and Ms. Voit’s classes. The students shared their learning from the Space Module in Wit & Wisdom by sharing essays and Google sites about Space.

Students with Teachers

Additionally, we honored the ELA team during the School Board Meeting on May 12.  This team is led by Lindsey Scanlon, K-12 Literacy Coordinator, and Judy Livingston, Literacy Coach. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to these teacher leaders for their dedication and support.  Check out the slides to outline the hard work of these teacher leaders.
