Each month, Principal Jackie Collins spotlights learning happening at Mahtomedi Middle School. This month, the Principal's spotlight focuses on perseverance.
At the beginning of the school year MMS students worked on setting some personal goals for the year in their Middle School Success classes. Thinking and dreaming ahead about what we want to see happen in our lives can be challenging. Putting things in place to make those goals a reality and sticking to the plans we make can be even more so. It is especially difficult when we run into problems or setbacks.
Across all of our curriculums and areas of study at the Middle School, we work hard to instill in students that some of the most important lessons come from our failures and mistakes. Those things that seem like they are pushing us off course might be the very things that lead us to the next big discovery or push us in a new and better direction.
I encourage you to set aside some time to revisit your child's goals with them now that we are getting close to the end of first quarter. What progress have they made? What setbacks have they encountered? What have they learned in the process? And are the goals they made in September still the ones they want to accomplish, or has their course changed a bit?
Middle School is a time of growth and discovery. And some of the deepest growth and most surprising discoveries happen when we take risks. Join us in reminding your children that it's ok, and even great, to try and to fail. It builds character, perseverance, and determination. And it provides some of the very best lessons we can learn.
Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of your child's growth journey.
Mrs. Jackie Collins

It's HERE! The 2024 Mahtomedi Middle School Fall Play is a radio show that you can watch! Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story of pirates and gold, will be presented in the style of an "old-time" radio show by our 6th through 8th grade students. Performances will be in the MHS Black Box Theater THIS WEEKEND, November 1st through 3rd!
The 2025-26 calendar for Mahtomedi Public Schools is now available. Click here to access a PDF copy of the 2025-26 calendar.
Our district-wide service project runs during November and provides gift assistance for students in need at Mahtomedi Public Schools. Between November 4-December 4, our school will be collecting Financial Donations/Ka$h 4 Kidz (students can bring cash or checks to their Middle School Success class; checks should be made out to Mahtomedi Middle School) MMS students will be shopping for clothes, pajamas, blankets, and non-toy needs. Families at Mahtomedi Public Schools who need assistance with holiday gifts may use this Google form to request support. The form will close on Nov. 30. The distribution of gifts will take place December 16-20.
As the final touches are made on 75th Street, we want to inform families that, as of Monday, November 4th, we will no longer excuse late arrivals due to construction or traffic delays. Students are expected to be in their seats when the 8:00 bell rings. If they are walking in the door at 8:00am, they are considred tardy. Please help reduce classroom interruptions by allowing ample time to get your child to school in the morning.
MMS students who are more than 10 minutes late to school without a valid reason are considered absent to 1st period. 3 Unexcused Tardies = 1 Lunch or After School Detention
We have recently had several driving violations on our campus that put our staff and students at risk. As a reminder, vehicles should not enter the crosswalk until all students and our security personnel are clear. Violations will be documented and communicated to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Drivers on our campus should always use caution, yield to pedestrians, and follow all Minnesota driving and traffic rules.
Safe Space club is starting in November. This club is open to 7th and 8th grade students. Safe Space is a place for LGBTQ+ and allies to build community. It will meet on the first Tuesday of every month.
8th graders are working on three different projects in the FabLab. They are rotating between making wooden toolboxes, creating vinyl stickers, and 3D printer design on the computer.
There are always reasons to celebrate! If you know of a staff member who has gone above and beyond, or have heard of a particularly excellent experience that your student had at school, we would love to hear about it! Click here to submit a celebration form and we'll make sure to take note and celebrate along with you!
