Wildwood Walk

As a special tradition, the Mahtomedi High School seniors visit staff and students at Wildwood Elementary School before they graduate. The event is a special time for the teachers to see their former students and for the elementary students to find joy in the seniors’ celebration. The seniors are greeted by applause, hugs, high-fives, posters, and congratulations on their achievement! The seniors also see it as a special moment as graduation nears. Congratulations to the Class of 2025!

Fab Lab Made Bubble Wands Bring Joy to Elementary Field Day

MHS Class of 2027 student, Yeupheng Lee, created bubble wands in the Fab Lab as a part of his coursework in Engineering 2 with Mr. Farmer. The bubble wands were recently used at Wildwood Elementary School's annual Field Day and brought so much joy to the elementary students.

Yeupheng took images of Wildwood's current bubble wands, and Mr. Farmer provided a tutorial on designing bubble wands. From there, Yeupheng developed multiple designs and figured out how to print the quantities needed by the time they were required at Wildwood. Yeupheng ended up using multiple printers over the week to create 50 bubble wands!

choir

Inside the Classroom: Choir

There are currently two choir classes at Mahtomedi: Belles Voix, a treble-only choir, and Concert Choir, a choir with all voice parts. Both classes are taught by Mr. Chad Garrels and can be taken for either one semester or the whole year. Choir is different from most classes as there are no quizzes or tests; students are simply required to be at each of the two concerts that they have per semester (four for yearlong students). Students mostly learn and rehearse concert songs but do other fun activities, such as Monday bonding, where students give an update on how their weekend was or an activity the choir officers choose, Friday listening, where a student plays a music video and everyone else fills out a simple worksheet about it, and secret snowbuddy, which is essentially secret Santa. Senior Charlotte Huesten says their favorite part of choir is the “great community building” that choir provides, while Junior Ada Thompson says getting donuts is hers. Many recommend this class to interested students as choir has helped them gain confidence when speaking or singing. ✏️Written by April Hoffoss, Class of 2027 student at Mahtomedi High School and Mahtomedi Public Schools Communications Intern

Community member

Community Members Sharing Their Expertise

Earlier this spring, Mahtomedi Public Schools and Community Education hosted our first-ever Career, Internship, and Volunteer Fair for MHS students! Over 30 businesses and organizations showcased opportunities, and more than 25 volunteers offered the chance to practice career skills with our MHS students. Their expertise empowered our students to explore what inspires them as they begin shaping their career aspirations. We spoke with several students about which tables sparked their interest. From pilots to cosmetologists to social workers, our students came away energized by the wide range of career opportunities available to them. Click here to watch a video about the impact of our students meeting these professionals.

MHS had 16 student athletes compete at Nationals on May 8th and 9th at the Kentucky Expo Center. Congratulations to the teams and coaches on this accomplishment!

Ali Lum

Mahtomedi Student Learns from Tragedy and Inspires Local Action

Learn more about Ali Lum (Class of 2026) in this week's issue of the White Bear Press.  In 2023, Lāhainā experienced devastating wildfires. Watching thousands of miles away and thinking about ways to help from a distance was Ali Lum. Ali is part Hawaiian, and seeing the tragedy of the fires inspired her to take local action. She started a club at MHS to help her peers not only understand the importance of Hawaiian culture but also be a part of keeping the Hawaiian culture alive. So, during the 2023-24 school year, Mahtomedi Hawaiian Culture Club was born.
