Each month, Principal Justin Hahn spotlights learning happening at our school. This month, the Principal's spotlight focuses on Passions.
On January 27, I was honored to be at the Metro East Conference Band and Choir Festival. Mahtomedi had 19 students at the event who were nominated by their directors for their musicianship and character to be performers. It was truly one of the best musical performances I’ve seen from young adults, and it was amazing to see the musical caliber of our students. I want to thank our music educators, Laura Goucher and Chad Garrels, for providing high-quality instructional opportunities for our students to develop their passion for music and develop their technical skills that truly made the students shine at this event.
Our students are entering course registration time for the 2025-26 school year. Our fine arts requirements include one credit from Art or Performing Arts. Students have the opportunity to take classes like concert choir, AP Music theory, guitar and piano classes, Zephyr wind orchestra and ensemble, and theatre.
The performing arts program supports our students to develop important skills like confidence, leadership, collaboration, and perseverance. Outside of the classroom, opportunities in performing arts include state and collegiate honor choirs and bands, the Zephyr Express, a cappella group, ensembles, pep band, drama club, three seasons of theatre performances, and serving in leadership team roles.
Our theatre students recently had the opportunity to compete in the Minnesota State High School League One-Act Play. Mahtomedi students performed the play Soundscapes. It was a great opportunity for students to gain experience in theatre competitions and showcase their talent. Our community has the opportunity to see this performance and a musical revue February 7-9; tickets are available at https://zephyrfinearts.org/
Registration for the 2025-2026 school year will be completed during advisory during the week of February 3-7.

Seniors- Please head to the CFAC immediately after 2nd hour so we can start the meeting on time.
On Wednesday afternoon, we will send a link to our meeting slide show for those that are unable to attend due to illness, PSEO or 916 classes.
This spring, MHS will have a Girls Flag Football Team run through the Minnesota Vikings, in cooperation with the National Football League. The season will run April through May. There will be an informational meeting during flextime on Monday, February 9th. Interested 9th -12th grade girls are encouraged to sign-up for the flextime session in SST.
Congratulations to Anna Greene (Class of 2025) who was named this week's White Bear Press Athlete of the Week!
Congratulations to trombone player, Chris Bennett (Class of 2028) on his selection to the MN 9-10 Honor Jazz Band! He rehearsed and performed on Saturday, January 25, and he will do so again at the MN Music Educators Conference coming up in mid-February!
Congratulations to Alexander Goldfine (Class of 2027), the first state-qualifying debater from Mahtomedi in the category of Congressional Debate. In the Minnesota State High School League Congressional Debate category, students mimic the legislative branch of government by creating bills they will advocate for in a chamber of allies and opponents. The students are given the bills in advance, but they do not know what side they will present or what arguments will be discussed. The students only receive one week to research upwards of 15 bills. The 2025 topics included abolishing mandatory sentencing minimums, establishing a universal basic income, and modifying the capital gains tax. Click here to read more.
Building Connections and AVID Skills
Amy Yeager is a social studies teacher at Mahtomedi High School (MHS) and has been an educator for 18 years. She has been at MHS for three of those years, teaching classes like U.S. History, Introduction to Psychology, and Human Geography. Even though she has only been at our school for a short amount of time, she has made a significant impact on the community and, more importantly, on her students. One of the areas of impact she has had on students in the classroom is her use of AVID skills. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a teaching tool that focuses on strong reading and writing skills, organization, and study strategies for success. Ms. Yeager brings her experience from other schools in AVID to MHS and has helped her teacher colleagues advance in their strategies as well as lead professional development training. Click here to read more about Ms. Yeager in an article written by Ila Erenz (Class of 2026) and Mahtomedi Public Schools Communications Intern
MHS Participates in One-Act Play Competition
The One Act Play competition brings together schools from all over to showcase their talent through short, 35-minute plays. The goal is to highlight creative storytelling, strong performances, and the ability to make the most of the limited stage time. Each play is judged on various factors, including script quality, acting, direction, set design, and overall execution. In this competition, each school can bring only 20 students for the cast and crew, along with two adult chaperones. Our team had an amazing time both performing and watching the shows from other schools. We performed on Thursday alongside four other schools, and the energy was incredible. This year, Mahtomedi High School performed Soundscapes, a play by Claudia Haas and Sarah Kraning. The story centers around a young girl named Iris, who uniquely experiences the world due to her synesthesia. Looking ahead, we’ll be performing Soundscapes again for our own audience in two weeks. Be sure to grab your tickets and join us for another set of fantastic performances!
