Principal's Spotlight on Learning

Each month, Principal Justin Hahn spotlights learning happening at our school. This month, the Principal's spotlight focuses on passions and interests.

One of the key components of Mahtomedi’s Portrait of a Graduate is self-awareness and self-direction. Within this area, we want to support students in developing a strong sense of self, including their passions, interests, strengths, and areas for growth. At Mahtomedi High School, this commitment comes to life through a wide range of opportunities that allow students to explore their passions and interests, helping them better understand who they are and where they want to grow.

Recently, I’ve seen these opportunities for future learning and career exploration on display in several activities. Our ninth-grade students recently participated in History Day as a part of our social studies curriculum. We observed student interests in both the topics they selected and the way they presented them. As a former history teacher, there were even project topics I had never heard about. We are also seeing our students express their interests and explore future careers through opportunities such as NASA HUNCH (students design products for NASA), Youth in Government (mock government operations held at the State Capitol), DECA (over 40 students recently qualified for State) and HOSA (students exploring medical careers). In these opportunities, we see students developing their public speaking skills, collaborating, and overcoming setbacks.

Through intentional scheduling, student voice structures such as Student Cabinet, and staff modeling of careers and reading, Mahtomedi High School creates experiences that connect students' interests to real-world exploration. Our daily Flex time gives students the opportunity to explore a wide range of clubs and start their own, such as the recently launched LEGO club. Our Superintendent’s Student Cabinet includes 14 MHS students who have recently been exploring how we can better inform and connect students with the many enrichment and extracurricular activities offered in our school. Something students are noticing around our school are signs outside classrooms and offices called “Zephyr Reads” that note the book staff members are currently reading. In the near future, we will also display signs about first jobs to help students connect to career paths. Together, all of these experiences help students build the confidence and skills to take an active, purposeful role in their learning.

Inside the Classroom: Business Pop Up

The DECA class recently hosted a pop-up event with the Wild Bean, a local coffee shop located in Mahtomedi. The Wild Bean is owned and run by Maddie McMahon (Class of 2022), who started working there when she was in high school and fell in love with it.

The pop-up gave DECA students the chance to experience what it is like to run a real business. Students helped plan the event and worked with the Wild Bean team to serve drinks to students and staff. When talking with Ms. Dahl, DECA teacher, she shared why events like this are important for students, “It's important for many reasons. Some of the DECA students got to work on it as a project, getting amazing experience. It was also a great partnership with the Wild Bean owner, Maddie. It really just sparks a positive vibe and just brings joy.” Her point was visible in how excited all the students were as they picked up their drinks and treats.

I also had the chance to talk with Maddie and asked her, "Why is it important for students to experience this kind of event?" She shared, “It helps with learning how systems work and the communication that you have to use to make the systems work. Working as a team.” Her answer shows how hands-on experience like this helps students build real-world skills.

Overall, the DECA and wild bean pop-up was not only fun but also a valuable learning experience that connected students with a local business and helped them develop teamwork, communication, and entrepreneurship skills.

What did students learn during History Day?

As a part of the social studies curriculum at Mahtomedi High School, students complete a History Day project. Students choose a topic related to the annual theme (this year the theme is revolution, reaction, and reform in history), research it, and present their findings in one of five presentation categories: Research Paper, Exhibit, Documentary, Performance, or Website. Click here to watch a video featuring Mahtomedi students sharing their learning experiences.
