Each month, Principal Justin Hahn spotlights learning happening at our school. This month, the Principal's spotlight focuses on personal success.
We want students to find their unique place in our school community and experience their own academic and personal success. Even just looking at this week’s newsletter, I can see so many examples of our students finding their unique success, whether it is in academic performance in our honor roll, through a class like band and exploring the opportunity to perform, joining a club that advances their interests, or achieving an athletic accomplishment, years in the making.
As educators, we examine the consistent opportunities and structure we provide to position all students for success. At the district level, our Portrait of a Graduate serves as a vision for the future, and defines the skills, competencies, and mindsets students need to thrive in a complex world. Our implementation of AVID strategies mirrors this work and educators at MHS are working on supporting students to develop skills like deep-level thinking and collaboration that are the heart of supporting students for success.
Recently, I was part of a team of educators from MHS including Jim Lane, Tiffany Moore, and Liz Haen who went to the Knowles Teacher Initiative. During our time, we explored how MHS can employ transferable skills in class and grading that mirror the Portrait of a Graduate work. Using our expertise to positively impact students, we will be working on a focus group and grant funding to ensure all students experience support to develop these essential skills, and we hope that it, in turn, creates more engaged learning. We know that opportunities as well as staff support are critical to supporting our students to find their own academic and personal success and we are committed to that endeavor.
There will be a mandatory meeting for students planning to attend PSEO during the 2025-2026 school year. This meeting is for both students and their parents/guardians. It will be held on Wednesday, March 19th at 6:00 PM at the Chautauqua Theater.
OHA is looking for MHS students to come to OHA on March 21, 2025, from 2:45-3:30 pm to read to OHA students. MHS students are role models, and when OHA students see you are interested in reading books, it will help them become avid readers. You can bring your favorite book or choose one that we will have available from the library. Click here to sign up to volunteer.
We will utilize a modified schedule for MCA testing on March 25 & 26 and April 22 & 23. This change aims to give students and teachers a testing experience similar to standardized exams like the ACT. These exams typically have longer testing periods, and by using this schedule, we aim to help students gain valuable experience in preparation for future tests. Please click here for more information about MCA testing and to view the adjusted schedule.
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an in-school academic support program that prepares students for college eligibility and success. It is a nationally recognized program that has been successfully implemented in schools across the country.
Please review the details and criteria, and if you believe your student would be a good fit for next year's AVID course, encourage them to complete the application using their student-issued email. Please note that participation is limited, and the application deadline is Monday, March 17.

Flex Opportunity: Future Healthcare Professionals
The Future Healthcare Professionals, commonly referred to as HOSA, is a nationwide club. Joud Wadi (Class of 2026) founded the group at MHS during the 2024-25 school year, and it continues to grow. The weekly HOSA meetings allow students to explore their passion and interests in the medical field through presentations with information on medical terminology or experiments. Time for HOSA to meet easily aligned with the school’s Flex time. Joud expressed her appreciation for the MHS Flex time; she said, “Flex time gave me the freedom to take that initiative, and seeing the impact it has on students' career exploration makes it all worth it.” Click here to read more about the group in an article written by Aoife Hiniker (Class of 2026) and Mahtomedi Public Schools Communications Intern.
