On Monday, October 28, MahtoREADi was held at Mahtomedi High School. Local author V. V. Ganeshananthan was the event’s featured guest. Ganeshananthan wrote the novel Brotherless Night.
Her book is set during the complex war in Sri Lanka that included the Tamil Tigers and Indian peacekeepers. It’s received critical praise in the United States and Great Britain.
Writing Brotherless Night took eighteen years. “When you spend this much time on a book, you have to also consider the possibility that at the end of all of the time you have spent, no one will read it,” she said. "The fact that this book got any recognition at all, that I’m here in this auditorium with all of you, seems like a great stroke of good luck.”
Twin Cities improv group Comedy Sportz performed at MHS for over 100 people on October 24.
"I love witnessing students on stage, taking a risk and gaining confidence and improv, in particular, serves as an excellent entry point for those who may be hesitant to participate in theater. Thank you to Community Education and Erica Whitson for bringing the Show Stoppers Club to our students. What a wonderful opportunity for students to deepen their appreciation for theater," Superintendent Barb Duffrin said afterward.
She added, "The Comedy Sportz actors did a great job of engaging the energetic audience and it was fun to witness how the students’ creative ideas and quick thinking evolved throughout the performance."
O.H. Anderson Elementary School held a walking school bus with the support of adult volunteers and the Safe Routes To School (SRTS) Committee. A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with adults. The route started at Lincoln Place Apartments. OHA staff and Principal Susie Prather led the students and adults as they crossed neighborhoods, picking up students as they went along.
Earlier this year, OHA had new sidewalks and Rectangular Reflecting Flashing Beacons installed with the support of the SRTS Committee.
Kylie Nyman joined Mahtomedi Community Education earlier this month. A Minneapolis resident now, she grew up in Hugo. In 2023, she graduated from the University of Saint Thomas with a degree in Psychology and Exercise Science.
Her experience includes working with youth and adults at outpatient rehab clinic. She is the Administrative Assistant to Community Education Director Kate Andersen.
